Jack-o'-lanterns have their origins in Irish folklore. The name "jack-o'-lantern" comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack, who was known for his deceitful and mischievous nature. According to the legend, Jack tricked the devil on multiple occasions, and when he died, neither Heaven nor Hell would accept him. He was left to wander the earth with only a burning coal inside a hollowed-out turnip to light his way. People in Ireland and Scotland began carving scary faces into turnips and other root vegetables, placing them in windows or outside their homes to ward off evil spirits on All Hallows' Eve, which eventually evolved into the Halloween we know today. When Irish immigrants brought this tradition to America, they found that pumpkins, native to North America, made for even better jack-o'-lanterns, and the tradition flourished.
